A small town 60 kilometers northwest of Kimberley and 27km northwest
of Barkly West situated between the Harts and Vaal rivers at the foot
of the Ghaap Plato. The town is dominated by aluvial diamond diggings.

The discovery of diamonds at Klipdrift on the Vaal River in 1869 drew
thousands of prospectors. The area was renamed Barkly West in 1873
after becoming part of the Crown Colony of Griqualand West.
