Clanwilliam is renowned for the wild flowers that carpet the surrounding veld in spring. The town was founded in 1814 on the farm Jan Disselsvlei and named after the Earl of Clanwilliam, father-in-law of Governor Sir John Cradock. Situated at the foot of the towering Cederberg Mountains, some 230km north of Cape Town, Clanwilliam is one of the oldest towns in South Africa.
